Individual Differences Research: the Relationship Between Working Memory and Intelligence
Lamia Elmechta
This work aims at investigating the relationship between memory and intelligence in first year students of English at the University of Constantine. For this purpose, we have hypothesized that those who possess higher memory abilities perform better in intelligence tests than less able ones. To test our hypothesis, we have taken a sample of 40 students from the population of first year, and designed two tests, one for memory and the other for intelligence. Both tests have been given in the English language. Intelligence test has measured chiefly reasoning, problem solving and language aptitude, while memory test has assessed simple storage capacity (mechanical recall) and active memory capacity (processing and recall). The data derived from the examination have yielded significant results, mainly between working memory and intelligence. These results could offer some help to teachers about the role of individual differences in memory capacities and their impact on learning, which is an aspect of intelligence.
