This study bestrides the areas of grammar and sociolinguistics. It has proved the insufficiency of grammatical analysis as an explanation of the nature of language as suggested by Chomsky (1965) and Katz (1966). Instead, we now know that the knowledge of a language or of its dialect, in this case the I?je??s?a? dialect of Yoru?ba?, is a composite of the knowledge of structure and use in the socio-cultural context and this is what underlies the concept of communicative competence
