Conservation and Management of Wetlands: with Special Reference to Junbeel of Assam Mainu Goswami

Wetlands are one of the crucial natural resources. Sustainable management of a wetland is important not only for the wetland itself, but for greater good of the rest of the wetlands, as similar guidelines of management can be practiced in other wetlands as well. The present study tries to find means and ways to prevent further alteration to the wetlands through an understanding of the socio-economical aspects of the people who derives their livelihood from the wetlands either directly or indirectly and their understanding of the values of wetlands. Awareness level and concern for welfare of the wetland increases with the level of education. Thus wetland can be conserved through educating the concerned peoples and local villagers about its importance of the wetlands and making them equal partners in the conservation process. It is also necessary to develop a community-based co-management model for the wetlands for their conservation in true sense. The findings of the study is expected to become helpful for the policy makers, environment conservationists and public in general for deriving the benefit of wetlands by way of adopting sustainable conservation mechanism.
