Depression is a common condition affecting a large proportion of women of childbearing age. Its incidence is higher in women than in men. Majority of cases of postpartum depression are preceded by antenatal depression. The psychological assessment of all pregnant women is an essential part of good antenatal care. Identification of risk factors during antenatal period can reduce the incidence of postnatal depression. The objectives of this study were to identify the risk factors for postnatal depression in antenatal patients and to detect the progression of depressive symptoms in postnatal period. Antenatal focus on the proper screening of the risk factors may help to identify women at risk of postpartum depression.
