Aside from its value in the professional and academic field, it also holds considerable significance in the communities undergoing urban regeneration strategies such as those in Valletta and the Grand Harbour (The Government of Malta, 2007). The aim of this research study is to investigate the concepts of sustainable development through urban regeneration in the rehabilitation plans for the two areas in question. It is imperative that existing literature will also be undertaken regarding the underlying issues of proposed projects, counterexamples as proof to urban regeneration malpractices alongside geographic and architectural key concepts relevant to the study as a whole. Aside from these, the study will also recommend efficient urban planning strategies, which will promote, and hold true to the principles of urban regeneration based on a sustainable development framework. Background of the Study: In order to contextualize the study, a background consisting of relevant information regarding the subject is necessary. This background includes the historical and cultural values of both Valletta, and the Grand Harbour area together with brief demographics of the locations, as well as, the Maltese islands. For the purpose of this study, the Grand Harbour area will mean, and include the Port area, and those towns and industrial areas immediately surrounding, and related to the Grand Harbour itself. It, therefore, will include the water area and shoreline. The landward areas are Valletta, Floriana, Marsa (including Albert Town), Kordin, Senglea, Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Kalkara (including Ricasoli).
