Early 19th-century Popular Conservatism has long been ignored by academics concerned with the radical tradition and the failure of Chartism. This study analyses conservative aspects of popular politics and culture in three English cities before the 1867 reform act, and discovers a longstanding tradition of a Conservatism from below.
