It was the middle of winter. The trees were laden with snow and ice. The year was 1901, and it seemed like the coldest winter ever. A steamboat turned toward the shoreline to drop a passenger. A tall man in his thirties stood, felt for his pistol and the heavy money belt that was tied around his waist. He moved slowly toward the gate. Just a week ago he was in upper Missouri where he was paid in gold coins for a so called business transaction. ( The story is full of suspense, mystery, and surprise.)
