From August 1914, people from Belgium came to Britain seeking shelter from the war. Most took refuge in London but some settled in Hull, whilst others went to Lincolnshire. Initially, they were regarded as heroes because of their stand against the German armies. Locals, including Belgian Catholic Priests already resident, provided homes, clothes and food, they also raised money for refugee support. Belgian family life continued in much the same way as in their homeland. In turn, the refugees contributed towards the war effort, for example working in munitions factories in Lincoln, Gainsborough and Grimsby, and helping with farming in South Holland. However, attitudes towards them gradually Changed. The Government restricted their activities, fearing that some might be spies, and the conscription of British men stirred up resentment. At the end of the war the refugees were sent home. This forgotten story makes fascinating reading and Katherine Storr has once again shed light on a little-known piece of history with her meticulous research.
