Bobby Johnson, the son of a slave owner, encounters many problems when he takes on an anti-slavery attitude. When he meets Ruthie Lancer, it is love at first sight, but Ruthie's father, who believes his slave are work animals which must be whipped to get the maximum work from them, does not agree with Bobby's anti slavery outlook, and tries to drive a wedge between his daughter and Bobbie. A series of successes and failures follow Bobby in both his romantic life and his goal to operate a cotton plantation without the aid of slaves.

Samson, one of his father's slaves, is Bobby's best friend. Samson takes Bobby's dream a step further and comes up with a plan to end slavery in the southern USA, but Bobby is unaware of his friend's plans. Eventually they join forces and together, with help from their wives, they begin to realize success, but will it be in time to prevent the USA's most devastating war?

Read about a time in history when rape was legal as long as you owned your victim, and pedophiles could do as they pleased with the children they owned. Murder, when committed while punishing a chattel they owned, was sanctioned by the law. Anyone who would interfere with any of these horrendous rights would face severe criminal charges.

Modeling after "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriette Beecher Stowe, The Alternative to War shows slavery at its worst and at its best. "The Alternative to War," continues this theme and shows that, even when the master is extremely kind to his chattels, it is wrong for one human to own another.

"The Alternative to War," is designed to educate in an entertaining way. The author welcomes feedback via reader reviews and would love to hear you honest opinions.
