As the drumbeats of war come closer to the Colonial shores of the Colonies, Jessica realizes the her parents have already selected a husband for her; he is a young Irish widower with three children who need the loving hand of a mother. While she likes the children, and is learning to love their father, she is the reluctant bride as she feels that her parents have sold her into a life of slavery, very much like the slaves who work her father's cattle ranch. A daughter ranks low on the scale of importance as the British come closer. Jessica needs to learn many things that will stabilize life on the frontier - she needs to learn to drive a wagon, shoot a musket, and face death head on.
