When a young Englishman goes to work in Mississippi in the 1950s, he doesn't realise that falling in love can have deadly consequences. Crossing the racial divide sets off a chain of events which he can't control, endangering both his life and that of the woman he loves. Arthur Belsay achieves a dream when he gets the chance to work in the USA, but Mississippi is not the America which he has seen on the movie screens back home. In the heat and humidity of prejudice, his adventure turns sour when his independent spirit collides with the rules of life in the Deep South. Fleeing to New York, they make new lives in what seems like a different country, but the past catches up with them. Ultimately, Arthur faces a character-defining challenge.
