It's the late 1800's and Claira's world is turned upside down as she is thrust into a marriage that was previously arranged by her late father. Orphaned, at sixteen with only three dresses and a tattered bible as her possessions, she journeys to Mississippi by train to join her betrothed in holy matrimony. Her new husband to be, William, is gruff and short with her when they meet, obviously ashamed of her poor social status. They are quickly married and she is thrown into caring for his dying mother almost immediately. One night not long after they were wed, William violates his new innocent bride in a drunken stupor. When he realized what he had done the next day he was ashamed and remorseful. He had never been a drinker and the only other time he had been drunk he had vowed to never do it again. After his realization of what he had done he seeks forgiveness and tries to win Claira's heart. Journey with both Claira and William as they are both in a marriage of convenience that shows them how to endure pain, heartache, overcome mistakes, seek forgiveness, and possibly find love.
