India after the Great War is in a state of flux. Faced with a growing clamour for self-rule the British authorities have introduced certain constitutional reforms and promised further changes once certain requirements have been fulfilled. But a gulf is opening up between the colonial rulers, who are seen as condescending and reluctant to leave go, and their Indian subjects who are eager to take control of their own destiny. Crude attempts by the authorities to curtail free speech and stamp out protests have further alienated the people and caused widespread indignation.
