A romantic story portraying underlying religious conflict of the Manx people in the 1850's.'The Captain of the Parish' is set in the west of the Isle of Man in the area extending out from Peel, and was written in 1897 by Canon John Quine, an educated individual. The novel is a study of Manx society - the etiquette, and way of life of its people, and vivid descriptions of the landscape - a Victorian love story with twists and turns, and turbulence of relationships divided by differing ideas and religious beliefs of the time, with reference to the religious emigration of the 1840's, referred to as 'Dippers' on the Island. The book differs from the original in that it includes a brief description of the story, cover photo, and many reviews of the time.
