Promise to the South is the sweeping saga of the Civil War. The North and South are becoming estranged over the issue of States Rights. Soon brother will be fighting against brother and 800,000 men will die. Shortly before the war, timid Lucinda Rogers of Boston marries the dashing Richard Cole, a wealthy South Carolina planter. In time their marriage grows as stormy as the Civil War itself. Before Richard goes off to fight, he makes Lucinda promise to keep the sanctity of the south. He wants her to keep their traditions and protect their "peculiar institution" of slavery. Does she do what's in her heart or what he bids her to do and keep her promise to the south?
