Seventy-two-year-old Johnathon Pane is battling what may be the greatest fish he's ever hooked. His endurance is nearly at its end when his good friend Cork Lofton shows up. When a young Department of Fish and Game employee named Beth encounters a massive salmon carcass during a dreary downpour, she fails to record it properly, much to the disdain of her superiors and-soon enough-the residents of Hebo. Facing humiliation and defeat in the first days of her young career, Beth soon crosses paths with two old fishermen who have become a local sensation.



Of course, any fishing tale is nothing without the fish, and at the center of this story is a salmon whose biological destiny leads it to its fateful encounter with a hook that will have a whole town buzzing.
