In the war torn, cluttered, messy environment that holds the population of planet earth, culture and diversity remain the predominant cause of hatred and death. This story is the tale of a coming together of this multiplicity of race, religion, male dominance, sexual identity and political beliefs. The protagonists work toward tolerance, then understanding and finally, love and acceptance. The actors in this struggle are faced with the decision as to whether to let go of rigid judgments or to walk away from acquaintances, friends and family members who look or think differently. August is a mixed-race orphan who was badly injured and abandoned. Kim-ly is the bastard child of an American who survived in a dark root cellar within a nation at war. Fin hated his gay father for the betrayal of his mother. Carolyn's mixed-race grandma was the 'nigger' in an Appalachian community. All fought a battle against self-hatred and shame. Long held religious beliefs and judgments that have caused fear, revulsion and hatred, are dealt with in a patient, loving process of forgiveness and ultimate acceptance. Could it be that the most difficult relationships we have in life, are spiritual brothers or sisters who agreed to come and present our greatest learning experiences on planet earth; loved ones who are willing to stretch our souls?
