P. J. Brooks taught in a high crime neighborhood in Lubbock, Texas, and the year before she retired, one of her students disappeared. P. J. was burnt out as a teacher, but not burnt out as a person. Haunted by the boy's absence, the next logical step was to become a private investigator. She found she had a knack for detecting after catching her own cheating husbands. After all, she spent her entire teaching career investigating kids' petty crimes and had a good take on human behavior. She returns to college to prepare for her license, but not in time to help find the missing student. After naming her company "Twisted Sister Private Investigations," she hands out her business cards and soon discovers P. I. work is a quirky mess. The first case drags her to the dog pound, and the second to a biker church. Along the way, she has a romantic encounter with Lynn, a gray-haired bail-bondsman, and Runnels, a para-military type who was a special investigator working for a prestigious law firm. Throughout the story, P. J. struggles with her wry and offbeat sense of humor, her faith, her flagging confidence, her mistakes as a rookie P. I., and growing older. Her constant companions are her silly dogs; Versace, a golden doodle and Rupert, a husky-shepherd mix. She has the support of her delightful friends, the Elgin Girls, and her indomitable mother.
