It's the middle of the night in the small northern Minnesota town of LaBrette when Crossings County prosecutor John Hoffman receives word that his daughter has been arrested for murder. He rushes to the police station where his friend Sheriff Vern Esch is sympathetic to his distresss but firm in his insistence thaqt fifteen-year-old Lily is the obvious suspect in her friend's death. John hires defense attorney Delphine Charpentier to represent his daughter and together they begin an investigation that seems, at first, to be leading nowhere.
