Peter Ballingall began working for the Bank of Scotland in St. Andrews beginning in March of 1839 when he was just fourteen years old as an apprentice. He eventually rose to the position of accountant of the Greenock branch of the Bank of Scotland serving the bank and the community for the next forty-two years and retired after more than fifty-four years. Peter Ballingall was born and raised at Rameldry, Kettle Parish, Fife. After the death of his father, George Ballingall (1764-1827) his mother left Rameldry and relocated with her children to St. Andrews where a young age took an interest in banking. He never married and resided at Greenock for a number of years. This then is the narrative of the life and times of Peter Ballingall, the oldest accountant of Greenock.
