Jefferson Barracks was founded in 1826 to become the United States Army's first infantry School of Practice. In addition to serving as a school of practice, Jefferson Barracks was a military reservation during the settlement of the western territories. As such, most units of the army called Jefferson Barracks home at some point in time during the nineteenth century. The first five mounted regiments in the army all organized at Jefferson Barracks: the Regiment of Dragoons, in 1833; the Second Dragoons, in 1836; the Regiment of Mounted Rifles, in 1846; and the First and Second Cavalry Regiments, in 1855. With many different units stationed at Jefferson Barracks at one time or another and the new units organizing there, the best and brightest young officers in the army were sure to appear at this important military post at some point. In addition, troops from Jefferson Barracks took part in every conflict in which the United States was involved from the Black Hawk War in 1832 through World War II. This book provides a brief biography of the officers that served at Jefferson Barracks who became general officers in both the U. S. Army and the Army of the Confederate States of America. The book also contains a brief biography of the men who were awarded the Medal of Honor and who served at Jefferson Barracks.
