As King Louis IX of France sets off on the Seventh Crusade, he receives a ghostly warning. A Wraith appears before him, declaring that if the king and his alliance of English, French, Templar, and Hospitaller soldiers do not leave the Holy Land in peace, their families will be haunted evermore. The king ignores the threat-and his subjects pay the price.

One such haunting forever changes the fortunes of the noble de Champ family. When a Wraith appears in their family home, the patriarch refuses to listen to her ghostly warnings. The Wraith responds by severing his head in front of his terrified wife, Blanche.

Another supernatural event delivers a further shock for Blanche: her son David is found wandering in a cemetery. Perhaps not so remarkable-had David not died fifteen years earlier. Now, here he is, as young and fresh as the day of his assassination.

As David tries to reclaim his old life with its ties to the throne, word of his return spreads. David left this life with many enemies, and all now plot his death yet again. Surviving this supernatural adventure will take the combined wit-and strength-of the entire de Champ family.
