Silah Taproot is launched on a journey of retribution when her adoptive mother is assassinated - turned to pure carbon - and their tiny cabin burned to the ground. Her entire hometown of Greenwell, is decimated by masked soldiers armed with arcane psyencework weaponry. It is shortly after the Second Great War; psyence is held in deep suspicion while folk magics are the rule of the land. Silah must use her empathetic Gift, which she doesn't yet understand, to help her navigate the Masonic States of America. She travels by boat, floating mountaintop, supra-dimensional portal, and even a "targeted gravitational elevator" that takes her ultimately the far side of the Moon. But there are staggeringly powerful forces Silah set against Silah, including a sentient mass of dark matter that slipped in to our universe through a tear in the Veil.
