Volume 21 LandscapesCaspar David Friedrich Caspar David Friedrich (5 September 1774 - 7 May 1840) was a 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter. Considered the most important German artist of his generation. Caspar was taught early in his artist education to sketch outdoor and became known for his representations of allegorical landscapes and the small space occupied by silhouetted humans in these scenes. Friedrich's work brought him renown early in his career, as contemporaries spoke well that Caspar had discovered 'the tragedy of landscapes'. The work of Friedrich fell in disfavour near the end of his life, as rumours spread regarding his mental health.
