Nick and Katja is the second novel of The Gift Quartet. The storyline of the first, Circle This Mountain, began after a fugitive from American justice named Nicolas Fenn stole a rare book from the Paris home of a wealthy international drug dealer. When Fenn found that he was the object of an intense manhunt, he fled Europe, heading for Washington state in the U. S. In the Quartet's second novel, Fenn seeks to hide out with an old girlfriend, Katja Mackenzie, at her home near Tacoma--in spite of the fact that each feels the other betrayed the love they once shared. However, Nick doesn't realize that Katja has become involved in a dangerous ecoterrorist plot to save Pacific Coast rain forests.

The first chapter of Nick and Katja commences as Nick reads a pamphlet proclaiming the crusade's intention to stop the clear-cutting of old growth timberlands, at any cost....
