Rwanda in 1994 became a civil war-ravaged land besieged by tribal strife, routine murders, and blatant abuses of power. Twenty-two year old Brigitte Kitenge was a beautiful, highly-educated, happily married young mother with a successful career, a respected husband, and a peaceful, middle-class life. Peacefully celebrating the birth of her second child, she had no idea that April evening would be the last time she would see many of her extended family members, and the end of life as she had known it. Factors beyond her control plunged her family into a fight and ultimately a flight for their lives.
