'The 52 Attributes of God' has been written not only to inform the expert theologian or to present evidence (bolstered by complex arguments) proving God's existence; but to clearly describe to the reader the characteristics of God. In addition, it hopes to correct any dangerous overemphasis upon either the attribute of holiness or of love. Furthermore, it is intended to provoke worship and to inspire prayer - devotional material having been inserted to facilitate this. The following verse provides the backdrop to this whole work:
"The more holy a person becomes
The more loving they are; The more loving a person becomes
The more holy they are."

Another intention has made been to settle the question; "To what degree, if any, can human beings become like God?" An attempt is made to show that, whilst some divine characteristics are (or can be) shared with humanity, many others are reserved for God alone. This fact should make nonsense of the 'deification' claims made by following certain eastern religions or by those with New Age and/or mystical Christian leanings.

An attempt has also been to draw a sharp contrast between an idol and the one true God of scripture. An idol is a false god, occupying a place within the human heart that should be reserved for God alone. Many different types of idols exist; but, in essence, they comprise of a dependence upon any person, place, object or idea in place of God. Idolatry is simply the worship of an idol.
