'Grittier than a gravel sandwich.' Main storyline is in two parts, and spans a period of 19 years. In the prologue, the reader is introduced to Ulysses, the other-worldly villain of the piece. Part One begins with the brutal assault of a minor who is left for dead in a park, but found and saved by a young policeman named John Foster, who makes it his mission in life to bring the perpetrator to justice. Part One charts developments in the case, and contains descriptions of the afterlife (Transition) and Heroes, a sinister by-product of the Transition process. In Part Two, we jump 15 years into the future. John Foster, now a detective with an impressive track record of arrests, is in pursuit of a killer who has struck in Bloomsbury. His investigations lead him to Marcus Barnes, who has been shown the murder in a dream by Ulysses. When he acts on his next prophetic vision and tries to save the victim-to-be, will Marcus lead the police to the killer, or will events follow a different path?
