A penniless Irish girl, abandoned on the streets of Edinburgh by a tight-fisted employer, Elizabeth Burke is in despair, until she meets a young woman from "the islands", Miss Flora Macdonald. Flora needs a maid to accompany her 'for propriety' as she explores the city. Soon, however, a series of events, including the murder of Flora's aunt's steward, convince them cut short their stay and depart for Flora's island home. But the busy peaceful life on the family farm is soon shattered.
