Delbert Eugene Handby was stuck with his awful name because his grandfathers were stuck with his awful name. He wasn't sure how much his name played in the bullying he got from Butch the Bully Anglin but it was relentless. When Butch's bullying forced Del, the name he preferred; to unlawfully enter Miss Lottie's house for refuge, it stirred up a mess of trouble. Miss Lottie, an elderly neighbor was not home and while Del was there hiding in Miss Lottie's broom closet she was robbed!Delbert tries to live life as usual but it was not to be. First Miss Lottie discovers his digressions just before nosey Ole Maggie Davis wrangled it from him and both being as they are, insisted on getting involved in solving the crime. Delbert as always is stuck in the middle, not wanting any part of it but forced to participate. Ole Maggie Davis show the boys what little girls are really made of when she forces her way into about every sport the boys are trying to leave her out of. Del is not beyond using her talents to win. Delbert and Maggie through their sleuthing and Miss Lottie's, get closer to the identity of the thieves until they reach a point of too close. They run for their lives from the thieves braving a vicious dog in a neighbor's yard. Del and Maggie head for Miss Lottie's again. Thankfully she is home and brings the two inside and called authorities to help put an end to the threat. She is rewarded with the hope of recovering some of her stolen property. Maggie accuses Del of putting her life in danger and declares she wants nothing more to do with him.
