Jayasinhji Jhala
Ganga Speaks is a collection of stories based on a summer spent on the banks of the sacred Ganga at Varanasi. Jayasinhji Jhala spent many days on the country boats with boatmen traveling upstream and down, past the sacred Ghats. He visited many temples, met priests and astrologers as well as keepers of the cremation grounds, and businessmen and women in the shops and stalls along the river. He observed the place of elephants, buffaloes, goats, cows, monkeys, dogs, cats, birds, dolphins, and the many pilgrims and visitors who come to the riverbanks of Varanasi. This experience, pregnant with ideas, has birthed these stories of wonder and reflection. They are imaginings, pronouncements and prophesy.
