Darcy Marie Winter is already lonely; few friends, a workaholic mother, a terminally ill, absent father, and no extended family. But it becomes a disaster one Friday afternoon when she is humiliated by her cheerleading captain, dumped by her boyfriend, and looses her father. Alone, downing in self pity, and failing at school, she begins to see a naked teenage girl out of the corner of her eye, who's not there when she looks. Only she sees the girl. Darcy suffers from a severe phobia about nudity, stemming from a summer camp prank gone bad when she was ten and can't even look at herself in the mirror. Now, a naked girl keeps appearing, even in the shower with her. Despite her horror, there is something about the girl that speaks to Darcy. Her eyes are lonely and lost. She seems confused and surprised that Darcy could see her. When Darcy demands she cover up, the girl can't touch anything and remembers nothing about herself and Darcy names her Jane Doe. In the middle of the night, Darcy is awakened from a nightmare by Jane's urgent but kind voice. Jane comforts her before brushing Darcy's sweaty hair from her eyes. Darcy feels Jane's hand on her face and realizes just how lonely she has become and it changes her feelings about invisible Jane. Darcy must figure out who her new invisible naked best friend is and get her own life back. She must discover the mysteries of her missing extended family and it all seems to be related to her now deceased father.
