In this fictional novel Doctor Henry Fieldstone mentally walks with Jeremy Leonard through his past on Hilton Head Island trying to understand why he committed the horrible crime he was accused of. During their initial meeting Henry soon realizes that Jeremy is nothing like the other inmates he had helped before, but no matter how hard he tries to convince Jeremy to appeal his sentence it seems to fall on deaf ears. Knowing he must try everything he can Henry reaches out to other members involved in the case in an attempt to beat the clock, now counting the minutes until Jeremy's execution.
