Karagiozis or Karaghiozis is an anti-hero shadow puppet that has his origin in the East. In the Ottoman empire, that replaced the Byzantine world, the Christian populations often were very poor. Karagiozis, according to tradition, was a poor Greek construction worker. While working he used to say a lot of funny stories. As a result the other workers were listening and not laboring so hard. The Turkish Pasha had Karagiozi finally put to death. His fame though spread and gave hope to the oppressed poor. He lives with his wife and three children in a hut, which always leaks from the roof when it rains. Across from him lives the Pasha at his mansion. Karagiozis tries with tricks and cheating to survive and feed his family. His best friend Hatziavatti reluctantly follows him in his schemes. Barba Giorgos is his uncle, the righteous shepherd, trying to keep Karagiozi in line. Stavrakas is a bully and a drunkard. Morphonios is a spoiled by his mother, gigantic nose, "good looking guy". Nionios is a poet from Zakynthos. Many other characters appear in the stories from all of History. Read in this issue "The Driver", The Immigrant" and "The Dam Grass Grower".
