My Football Blues from the Football's Point of View
Rich Linville
I'm a newborn football. It's dark in here. I hear someone say that Spalding created the first American-made football in 1887. Each Spalding football is made from a pig's bladder covered with leather and rawhide lacing. That's why footballs are sometimes called pigskins. Today, what do you think that I'm made of? I'm not made from a pig's bladder. Today, I'm made from an inflated rubber bladder covered with pebble-grained, cowhide leather. The name "Wilson" is burned on my skin. Ouch! That hurt!
