In May, 2017, a few months after I turned fifty, I became a grandfather for the first time. A man who has lived more than a half-century and has worn as many hats as I have worn (son, brother, father, husband, or friend) and has worn them in as decidedly unspectacular a fashion as I have legitimately wonders if this life shall offer him a shot at redemption. Whether I deserved it or not, it did. Maggie was - and is - that opportunity. She had me at "Hello." I became a better man when I became her Pop Pop. It is the greatest gig I have ever had. It is the greatest gig I shall ever have. I had buried all of my grandparents by the time I was ten. I have no memory whatsoever of my father's father and only a slightly better recollection of my mother's father. Not knowing how long my eldest grandchild and I shall be together on this planet, I wanted to do something for her that I hope outlives me. I wanted to give her a gift that she can carry with her all of the days of her life. This book is the result of that desire. Given its relative brevity, you might think that it came together rather quickly. It did not. As I write these words, Maggie is more than halfway to her second birthday. I hope that she lives to be at least ninety-two and that, if she does, she never forgets Pop Pop's Rules.
