A novella taking place during the first Communist Revolution in China. In 1949, after the defeat of the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party), the Chinese Communist Party proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Peasants, who had for centuries farmed their own small pockets of land and observed traditional practices, festivals, banquets, and paying homage to ancestors, suddenly found it all gone. Chairman Mao's policy of using a state monopoly on agriculture to finance industrialization went into full effect, and immediately peasants were brought under Party control by establishing agricultural collectives. The local landlords and wealthier peasants had their land holdings and other assets forcibly redistributed to poorer peasants. It was the beginning of the most radical wide sweeping transformation in China's long history; it was G?ibiàn... The Change.
