As it turned out, civilian life wasn't what Sherman thought it would be. It wasn't long after retiring that the "good life" of being a civilian started to weigh on him. Sherman quickly realized that he wasn't a civilian and probably never would be. He was and always would be a Marine. He realized that life would never be the same. He was unable to cope with the feeling of being a nobody, slogging through the days without any feeling of accomplishment or purpose. There has to be more, he thought. Is this really it, is this my life, is this what I am meant to be? Protecting those who cannot protect themselves was what drove me and was the only way I was able to function in the world and still feel like a productive member of society. "What are you good at?" his coworker asked. "Good at? Locating, closing with, and destroying the enemy," Sherman stated with a slight smile. "Well, I'm not sure if there are too many of those opportunities out here for that," another employee mused from across the break room. "Yeah I know, tell me about it . . . I wish I could go back to killing people for a living, I was so good at it,"
