Aged human remains found at the construction site of a coming store make the evening news. Buried with the bones is an elaborately carved box with a mysterious, faded note containing a reference to Eden. The property once belonged to a resident related to Marlita Wells, whom the police question. The revelations render a family with a dark past. Alton Weber lives in Lake Laura, where he meets Mary, a mysterious neighbor. He takes her from her front porch with ill intention, but the path deviates when the two marry. The turbulent and strange relationship between Mary and Alton produces three children. A ghost haunts Alton in his dreams. He believes that his first child is the reincarnation of the disturbing girl he encounters at night, leading to the water's edge of Lake Laura. The lake has its depth of secrets as well that surface in the meandering words of Mary, who gives them up on her deathbed.
