"The Last Day of My Life" is a story about love, loyalty, police corruption, rape, murder, deception, alien abduction and old blues guitarists. And if that hasn't put you off, I don't know what will. Steve Lord is happily married and lives with his wife, Kate, and their little boy, Ben. One afternoon, while Kate is at her sister's and Ben is with his grandmother, Steve's life is transformed by some strange lights in the sky. At first he believes them to be the South Yorkshire Police helicopter but, just as doubt and stomach spasms set in, he passes out. He wakes, several hours later, lying on his back on the carpet. Though his memories of what happened in those hours are very sketchy, they are enough to alarm him. Forcing away what he knows to be an irrational belief, he does what any sane man would do: goes to the pub. It is on his return home from The Stag that things begin to go horribly wrong. An act of true altruism and bravery (and quite possibly intense stupidity considering that he was messing with the dreaded Spencer family) results in Steve being held at Her Majesties pleasure. It soon becomes apparent that the often heard mantra of, "The innocent have nothing to fear from the law," has no grounding whatsoever in reality and Steve has to take that law into his own hands. Steve meets Claire, a young woman living on the streets with a terrible secret of her own. These two unlikely allies hide from the police, meet with the strange doctor Gerard, try to discover the real secrets of the Spencer family and clear Steve's name. It is a journey on which Steve learns more about himself, his marriage and the world in which he lives than he could ever imagine.
