Produced by the legendary Broadway producer Charles Dillingham, "The Candy Shop" was hailed as the "liveliest show on Broadway."When the dependent son of a wealthy candy shop owner falls in love with one of his father's employees over his objections, the lovers run away to Coney Island. The girl is subsequently discovered to be an heiress and with wedding bells all is righted in the end. While not a favorite of the critics, "The Candy Shop" caught on with audiences and became a "must see" of the summer season. It later had a successful tour. Librettist George V. Hobart broke from the then current mode of musicals about old country princesses and nobility to write musicals about ordinary American people. During the early 20th Century, Hobart wrote the books to 35 musicals, eight musicals in three years, numerous plays as well as skits for the Ziegfeld follies.
