The Greenhorn Diary is one of a series of adventure stories set on the edge of the wilderness in northern Minnesota. The story follows the coming-of-age excitement of the first deer hunting trip of Robbie Ericson, together with his brothers Paul and Johnny, as revealed through a mysterious diary he has left behind. The origin of the diary is a riddle until Johnny remembers why his eccentric brother wrote the diary in the first place. As the tale unfolds, the reason why the diary exists and yet was never turned in to his teacher Sister Gilbert becomes increasingly apparent. The deer hunting trip creates the ideal battlefield for the younger version of Robbie to grapple with the mental concepts of time and space, while at the same time going through the moral confusion associated with the physical changes he is encountering as he matures. Ultimately, the lifelong impact of adolescent guilt and shame on Robbie, together with his unique thoughts on time and space, are explored and tenderly addressed through the prism of both literature and brotherhood.
