The writer worked for the Soo Line Railroad for nearly forty years. Over that period, there were many incidents that lent themselves to the possibilities he wrote about in these stories. The French Lady is not a lady at all, but an old railroad business car used in the various episodes. It was named after the French wife of a former owner of the car.
