Born in India to a wealthy British family, Mary Lennox is a sick, grumpy, lonely 10-year-old girl who has been spoiled by her servants and neglected by her parents. When an epidemic of cholera kills its parents and servants, Mary remains orphan. After a brief stay with the family of an English clergyman, they send her to Yorkshire, England, to live with her uncle Archibald Craven, who is a widower and travels frequently leaving her in the care of the housekeeper, the annoying Mrs. Medlock. she is soon intrigued by her waitress, Martha, and by the stories she tells about her life, Martha mentions the walled garden of the late Mrs. Craven, When her uncle returns home briefly, she asks if she can have a little land to take care of, and while she tills the ground, she finds the key to the closed garden, which she proceeds to explore. Its interaction with nature stimulates a transformation: it becomes more friendly, more considerate and extroverted.
