Garrett, after having retired from working with Los Angeles District Attorney, leaves Los Angeles and opens up private practice in the desert. Garrett is asked by his client Boothe Kinski, to locate his missing wife who hasn't been seen in two months. Garrett finds his way through the blistering heat of the desert, the mountains of neighboring Big Bear, San Francisco, a notorious California Prison, and Montana, retracing her steps and checking last known addresses. Not knowing whether she's been killed, or in hiding opens a disturbing reality the likes of which, even as a Los Angeles attorney, he hasn't seen before.
