A dissertation required a research question, review of the literature, research process, writing of the results and a defense. In the 70's computers were just arriving on campus. Research was done through professional journals; books in the reserve section of the library and microfilm and microfiche. Doctoral students on campus were assigned cubicles in the library in which to keep materials that were to be used only in the library. The typing was done on an electric typewriter. Footnotes were at the bottom of each page. This required careful planning and spacing. Each time a revision was necessary that page and sometimes all subsequent pages had to be retyped. Those with the means paid typists to organize their manuscripts. I typed each and every page, often more than once. Colored illustrations accompanying some of the reading selections were colored by hand. Color copying was not yet common and if available was expensive. Over time colors have altered and many of the pages contain signs of aging. These pages have been copied from the originals.
