Hipolita's friends believe she is horse-crazy but with the blood of gauchos and vaqueros coursing through her veins, is it any wonder the girl is drawn to those noble animals? Unable to afford a horse of her own, she works after-school at Hidalgo, a stable near her home where she learns to ride a roly-poly pony named Poco around the ring. When they are finally given their freedom to explore the trails, the frightened pony bolts into a mysterious cave dubbed the Dragon's Mouth and comes out the other side transformed into a beautiful Spanish barb. It seems they have left New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment and entered the magical realm of Heartwood where Hipolita is able to ride on the back of Luna the unicorn and Avery the elf shows that love is able to cross the barriers of time and space.
