Following the pyrrhic victory at Passchendaele, families throughout the Commonwealth had hoped that the tide had turned at last and that soon their sons and daughters would come home. However, the renewed strength of the Central Powers dashed those hopes almost immediately as they mounted the Spring Offensives in 1918. While Brad Palmer's parents knew that Brad was a survivor who could find his way home, they also knew that with his numerous challenges as a sniper, and in a new role, as an aircraft gunner, the odds of survival were working against him.
