Christiania, Norway 1721Brander and Regin return to Kildahlhus in Hamar intending to restore Regin's ancient family estate now Brander's estate to its former glory. As part of making the estate his own, Brander starts by tearing out a wall and quickly makes a grisly discovery: a man's body stuffed in a trunk which has been hidden there for three years. Reeling from the revelation that her dead husband was a murderer, Regin and Brander try to discern who the victim was. They discover a path of doomed affections, an unexplained disappearance, a false identity, a family secret and a staggering connection that none of them ever expected.
