It is 1912 and Gideon Drew sends his first novel to book publishers Clanford and Fox. They like the book very much, so much so that they decide to steal it and publish it as their own work. The book is a great success, and Joshua Clanford and Obadia Fox become rich beyond their wildest dreams. Gideon receives nothing for his work and one year later, still living in abject poverty, his wife and daughter die from a disease which could have been prevented had Gideon had any money. Devastated by his loss, Gideon stops writing, joins the army and askes to be sent to fight in Mesopotamia in World War One, in the expectation of dying on the battlefield and joining his family. During one attack on the enemy's trenches, he falls into a bomb crater and meets a stranger eating a banana. The stranger offers Gideon the banana and a proposition that will change his life and give him back everything he has lost. Reluctantly he accepts the offer. One hundred years later, Gideon re-appears in London and delivers another novel to the same publishers now under the ownership of Blake Thornton. Blake is completely unaware of what happened in the past between Gideon and Clanford and Fox. This book is also very successful, but this time Gideon receives all the recognition and the rewards, and at last, he can begin to claw back all that he lost a hundred years before... but at what price.
